My great great grandfather, Wilhelm Gotthardt Gaertner, who changed his name to William G. Gardner,  came to the United States in 1854 from Klein Ingersheim, Kingdom Of Württemberg at the age of 21.  He eventually settled in Canaan, Connecticut where he married Louise Kohler on 3 July 1860.  He and Louise had a very short time together as she died giving birth to their first child, William Fritz Gardner on 6 May 1861.  Grandfather muddled along caring for their newborn son until 1 January 1862 when he married for the second time.
