Apparently, Ancestry wants to report on both sides of the political aisle.  Cousin Jack appears to really be my 8th cousin, once removed.   Our MRCA, Esther Ballard is my 8th Great Grandmother.   The pedigree is in agreement with substantiated evidence for my line.   One hopes Ancestry is not inventing pedigrees for former Presidents of the United States (but that is probably another To Do List item).   My mother was a collector (some would say hoarder) of 50¢ pieces.  I am not sure how many rolls of Kennedy Half-Dollars she eventually accumulated.   Too bad she never knew it was her cousin.
