“Dear Cousin, Lee you want to come out and go to the shadow social Friday night — it is over to Lucile Harmons. Charles Young is going to take a load over. Tell Ambrose he wants to go. Will look for you. Good-by. Mae [Mariam Mae Wright]. (Mamma [Marietta Lee Wright] is tired after her trip)”

Now to figure out what a SHADOW SOCIAL was in 1910….. And, why the family living in Southfield, Michigan, had post cards of a church in Toledo, Ohio.

Central Avenue, Belle Isle, Detroit, Mich 1910

Central Avenue, Belle Isle, Detroit’s principal recreation spot is an island in the Detroit river connected with the city by a bridge 8 feet less than half a mile in length.

It comprises 702 acres, is over __ miles long and boasts over 20 miles of fine macadan roadway which completely circles and frequently intersects it. A fine zoo, aquarium, horticultural building, swimming, and sailing pavilions, casino, and boat livery are in connection. The city has expended over $1,500,000 on it since its purchase in 1879.

“Redford, Mich. Nov 29. ’10. Aunt Effie [Effie Lee Weaver], Uncle Willie [Lewellyn Lee] is better. We haven’t heard from Mrs. Gray since yesterday. She was about the same. Mr. Douglas is failing. Uncle Willie was there this morning. Don’t suppose Lee [Weaver] has got home. Wasn’t that bread good you took home? Estelle [Wright]”

Now that is packing a bunch onto a single post card! The Gray and the Douglas families were neighbors of the Lee family in Southfield.

“Jun 9-09 Columbus, Ohio. Mr. L[emuel] Weaver. Dear Brother and family hope you are all well. Say Rose’s [Roseanah Weaver Fisher] birthday will be the the 19th of this month and we want to send her some Birthday cards. She will be at Lew’s [Charles Lewis Weaver’s]. The address is Star Rout No 1. Tell Lee [Weaver, his son] to send her one from Buffalo [where he was docking during his summer on Great Lake steamers]. She is not very well. C. W. Rinehart [Christiana Weaver Rinehart]. don’t forget to put on Corning, O.

My great grandfather’s sister trying to organize a birthday card avalanche to their sister whom is no feeling well — Aunt Rose lived until 1931. Not sure why Aunt Teen had a post card from New York to send from Ohio, but she did….

“Dear Cousin, Lee will you be home next week. If so, Clare [Clare Lavern Wright] and I will be in and stay a day or two. Our school does not start till a week from Monday. Mamma [Marietta Lee Wright] has been having a time with her teeth. Will close. Mae.[Marian Mae Wright]”

Apparently, school did not start until after Labor Day in Southfield back in 1909.

This was a birthday greeting to my great grandfather from his niece, Erma Lorene Churches, the daughter of his wife’s sister, Ora Lee Churches.

Apparently, my grandfather wanted my great grandfather, Lemuel Weaver, to see a picture of the Ohio State campus. The post card is simply addressed to Lemuel L. Weaver Detroit, Michigan 94 Tireman. No signature. No message. Luckily, grandpa, Lee Weaver, had very distinctive penmanship.

Post card from Florence Koontz to Lee Weaver — both birthdays were in May, so we know they were not really concerned about being right on time, or, maybe they were just being coy. An interesting point is that the card was simply addressed:

Cor Scotten Ave.
Detroit, Mich.
and it was delivered. Simpler times!

Hey, not all post card were those pretty post cards. Some served as simply the early 1900’s version of text messages. This one was post marked Redford, Mich, Mar 2, 1909, and simply addressed Mr Lee Weaver, Ypsilanti, Mich C.B.C.

“I’m coming not yet, but soon. If nothing happens will leave Detroit on the nine o’clock car Tuesday morning that will get me in Ypsi at eleven come down to the waiting room at noon and I be there. REG. PS Is your feet dry yet.”
