The Pingree Monument – 1911

PingreeMonument1911

The Pingree Monument in West Grand Circus Park, was erected in 1904 by popular subscription.  The late Hazen S. Pingree was four times Mayor of Detroit, and twice Governor of Michigan.  He died June 18th, 1901, aged 60 years.

Post marked Sept 16, 1911, Redford, Mich.

Addresses to Mrs. Effie [Lee] Weaver: “Sat Morning.  Dear Sister, Do not worry about me, I am all right this morning only a little weak, was much better yesterday and should have sent you a card but will try and have it get out this morning.   Myra [Lee Churches]”

Before the constant use of the telephone, the penny postcard was the “instant” communication device used.

Log Cabin, Palmer Park (Detroit) – 1911

LogCabin1911

Log Cabin, Palmer Park – Built on of land donated to the city by Ex-Senator Thomas W. Palmer in 1893, and situated north of the city at the extreme terminal of the Woodward Avenue car line, is one of the city’s favorite breathing spots.  Its center piece is a log cabin which is an exact reproduction the home in which Senator Palmer resided when Detroit was little more than a trading post.

Post Marked Redford, Mich,  Aug 1911

“Dear Effie [Lee Weaver]  I think if you want to can corn you had better come out soon.  It is at the best now.  Libbie is at Ma’s [Esther Jenks Lee’s] today, will be in this neighborhood tomorrow is going home Saturday.  You better come tomorrow.  Yours Ettie [Marietta Lee Wright]”

I wonder if the log cabin is still there.  Effie was my great grandmother, living in Detroit.  Her mother, Esther Jenks Lee, lived in Southfield in the home her father built in 1851 — see photo at top of blog.

Water Works Pumping Station 1910

PumpingStation1910

Post marked Eloise, June 11, 1910 to Mr Lee Weaver, Eastern States DC, Buffalo, N.Y.

“Your card and hand found me fine and dandy.  I think I will be eating bon-bons soon.  Write soon,  Birtha B. Deming.  ”

The Pumping Station at Water Works Park is a sight well worth seeing.  The ponderous machinery in connection with its mammoth pumps forces 103,000,000 gallons of water through the mains every twenty-four hours.   This view shows the three Allis-Chalmers triple expansion engines.  The fly wheels on each of the engines weigh more than forty tons each.

Hoping this finds you on the gain, and when you get well enough come out here.  Wish it was warm enough so I could come in, am anxious to see Aunt Rose.   Best Easter Wishes for all.   Grandma Lee [Esther Jenks Lee (my great great grandmother)]

One of many post cards in the collection I inherited.   This one was post marked April 10, 1914.   My grandfather, Lee Weaver, collected a vast number of post cards over the years.   I have decided to publish them on this blog with the transcription of the message.
