FLT -1911

OddFellows1911

FLT  — This is the logo for the Odd Fellows.  it represents friendship, love, and truth.

Post marked Ypsilanti, Mich.  Jan 5, 1911.  Addressed to Lemuel Weaver, 94 Tireman, Detroit, Mich.

“How does this look to you.”

No signature.   The handwriting looks to be that of Lee Weaver, Lemuel’s son, who was attending Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti at the time.  Great grandfather Lemuel Weaver was a member of the Odd Fellows — I have his pocket watch (a wedding gift from his wife, Effie Lee Weaver) and the Odd Fellow symbol is hanging from the chain.

Will look for a card Friday.  Mae [Mariam Mae Wright].    Mother [Marietta Lee Wright, Effie’s sister] and I are ready to go to the Gleaners”

The curfew tolls … 1911

CurfewPoem1911

The curfew tolls the knell of parting day    The ploughman homeward plods his weary way.

Post marked Redford, Mich., Jan 18, 1911.  Addressed to Mrs. Effie L[ee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan.

“Jan 17, 1911.   Aunt Effie, Grandma [Esther Jenks Lee] said you were coming out Sat.  Uncle Willie [Lewellyn Lee, Effie’s brother] is going to the Hill Sat. morning.  You wait to Aunt Ora’s [Ora Lee Churches, Effie and Lewellyn’s sister] till he calls for you.  If it is bad weather you can get off at the hill. Uncle Willie and Wesley are flailing beans.  I  have just been out and see how it was done.  All are well.  Hope you folks the same.  Estelle [Wright]”

No idea who Wesley was.  I have checked the 1910 census and he does not appear to be a neighbor.  Since Willie was farming his parents’ land on his own, there is a good chance that Wesley was a hired hand.   Charles Norton Lee, Esther’s husband, and Willie’s father died in 1905.

Flailing was the method of threshing the beans after they were harvested and dried — long before the modern combines which do it all.

S.S. Roosevelt at Night – 1911

SSRoosevelt1911

S.S. Roosevelt at Night  – 21C

Post marked Chicago, Ill, Jan 6, 1911.   Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, #94 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Michigan.

“Jan 6 -11.  Dear Lee, Why don’t some of you folks write did you get the letter I sent at Christmas. I am in this Windy City tonight.  Aunt Christeen [Christiana Weaver Rinehart, Lemuel Weaver’s sister]”

Aunt Teen seems a bit peeved that she has not heard from her brother’s family since Christmas, but then it also appears she is traveling since she lived in Columbus, Ohio.  I wonder if she talked like she wrote — one constant sentence with no pause.   I read that puncutation is going out of style in 2016 due to electronic communications and shorted messages.  I think this started over a hundred years earlier.

Great Grandma Weaver never sent this card.  I think she was asking Estelle to bring Eggs and Butter from the farm when she comes to visit.  Not sure why she did not sent it.

Elks’ Club Building, Parkersburg, W. Va. – 1910

ElksClub1910

Elks’ Club Building, Parkersburg, W. Va.  219423.  The Leighton & Valentine Co., N.Y. City. Printed in the United States.

Post marked Parkersburg, WV, Dec. 30, 1910.  Addressed to Mrs Effie [Lee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave.  Detroit, Mich.

“A Happy New Year.  Mr & Mrs Sherwood”

I am not sure who the Sherwoods were — they do not appear in any of my family records. But, the card was sent to Great Grandmother Weaver and Grandpa added it to his collection.  Notice, this is one of the first post cards that calls out that it was printed in the United States — most of the others, if any origin is given, were printed in Germany.

But Grandma [Esther Jenks Lee, Effie’s mother] and I done the butchering alone and are all through.  Thought it was to cold for you to come out and leave Uncle Lem [Lemuel Weaver].  We are all well.   I am over home today.  Want you to come out Chirstmas.  Estelle [Wright]”

A bit of guilt being passed to Effie from Esther through Estelle?
