New Year Greeting – 1914

newyears1914_2

New Year Greeting.  As friends exchange the Season’s greetings with their loved ones far away, accept an old friend’s hearty wishes for a joyous New Year’s day.  Series 346.

Post marked Jackson, Mich.  Dec 31, 1913 and then Detroit, Mich.  Jan 8, 1914.  Addressed to Mr. Weaver of Diamond Lodge, Diamond Temple Cor Lawton and Gd River Ave. Detroit, Mich.   {Written in pencil across the address: 92 Tireman]

“186 W. Main St, Jackson, Mich.  Dear Friend and Bros.  I hear that you are feeling much better and hoping that continues though out the  New Year. Come and see me when you can.  You and wife.  We have a spare room and the latch key is always out to a friend.  Yours in F.L.T, H.B. Storey.”

Even though the card was forwarded to Grandpa Lee’s address, it was meant for his father, Great Grandpa Weaver, Lemuel who lived at 94 Tireman.   The addressing that was able to get the mail through in 1913/1914 is quite interesting in the early 21st century when a misplaced digit on a Zip+4 gets the mail returned.

New Years Greeting – 1912

newyears1912_7

New Years Greeting ©D.G. No. 42

Post marked Redford, Mich.  Dec. 28, 1912.  Addressed to Mrs. Effie [Lee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Mich.

“Effie, we are going to Saginaw.  Steve [Stephen A. D. Wright] and I will go Tues. of Wed. morning.  Will go from Detroit,  Hope you will go with us.  Ettie [Marietta Lee Wright]”    [Then across the top of the card] “Lee, the dance at Farmington is Tuesday night”

Aunt Ettie was Great Grandma Weaver’s sister.  The trip to Saginaw was probably to visit their Aunt Alta.    The note to Grandpa Lee was probably from Ettie’s and Steve’s daughter, Stella.

A Happy New Year – 1909 / 10

newyears1910

A Happy New Year (1910 Calendar).  A-215.

Post marked Columbus, Ohio, Dec. 30, 1909.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, #94 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Michigan

“Dear Nephew, Many thanks for the nice Gold Brick.  It is fine.  Mary Ethel was here.  I said it was a gold brick.  Mary said it was Lard.  Miss Park said Buck Wheat flower [sic.].  So when I opened it, it was gold.  Rose [Roseanah Weaver Fisher] says thanks for her kerchief.  Hope you will all be well and has a prosperous year.  Love to all yours.  Christeen. [Christiana Weaver Rinehart]”

Not sure what “gold” Grandpa sent Aunt Teen.  Aunt Rose and Aunt Teen were both sisters of Great Grandpa Lemuel Weaver.

A Happy New Year – 1911

newyears1911

A Happy New Year.  Made in Germany.

Post marked Detroit, Mich.  Dec 29, 1911.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tireman, City.

“Dec 29, 1911   Card received.  Pleasant surprise.  Eikman.”

I have no idea whom Eikman was.  Interesting addressing.  In the early 20th century, mail within the city where it was being posted only required the work “City” and the post office knew it was local.

Me thinks it is the time of the year …

xmas0012

Me thinks it is the time of year to wish all friends good luck, good cheer.  C.B. Series 100.

No post mark [not mailed].  Addressed to Mr. Lemuel Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan

“Wishing you a Merry Xmas , and a Happy Prosperous New Year, and many returns.  Many thanks for the cards.  Hope you are still getting strong.  Sister Christeen [Christiana Weaver Rinehart]”

No date indication of when Aunt Teen sent this to Great Grandfather Weaver.  It was probably in the early 19-teens when all of the other communications were coming to the family concerned about his health.

This is the last of the Christmas post cards for 2016.  There are still more in Grandpa Lee’s collection.   2017 is another year!

A Merry Christmas – 1909

xmas0011

A Merry Christmas.  A219.

No post mark.  [not mailed]  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, Detroit, Michigan

“12-23-09    Hellow Bad Boy,  What are you doing.  It is cold here.  Remember one and Grandma and all that inquires after one.  Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year to all.  Auntie R___ [Roseanah Weaver Fisher]”    [Then written across the top of the card] “This $1.00 is for you”

OK, Aunt Rose didn’t always make a lot of sense. Apparently, she was upset at Grandpa Lee in 1909 over some infraction.  But, she did sent him a dollar (at least she did if the card and the dollar were sent in an evelope)

Hearty Christmas Wishes

Hearty Christmas Wishes.

No post mark. [not mailed]  Addressed to Mr. Lemuel Weaver, Detroit, Michigan.

“Dear Brother,  I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.  Rose [Roseanah Weaver] Fisher”

Aunt Rose was the eldest child in Great Grandpa Weaver’s family and she took her role seriously.  She was widowed in 1896.  The card probably dates from the early 19-teens based on postage requirements on the card.

Post marked Detroit, Mich.  Dec 23, 1920.  Addressed to Little Miss Weaver, 92 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Mich.

“Dear Little Girl,  We all wish you a very Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.  From all the Shimmans”

This card was sent to 14 month old Leila Marie Weaver.  The Shimmans do no appear anywhere in the family records, so I assume they were friends of Grandma Florence and Grandpa Lee or possibly Great Grandma and Grandpa Weaver.  At this time, Florence, Lee, and Leila lived in the upstairs of the duplex owned by Lemuel and Effie on Tireman (hence the addresses 92 and 94 Tireman Ave.).
