Easter Greetings – 1921

Easter0008

EASTER Greetings.  It’s for purely selfish reasons that I send this card, ’tis true, Because it brings me happiness to greet a friend like you!

Post marked Columbus, Ohio.  Mar 24, 1921.  Addressed to Miss Lela [Leila Marie] Weaver, 4238 Tireman Av., Detroit, Mich.

“How do you do my little girl?  When are you coming to me again?  With Love, G. Koontz [Grandma Koontz – Phebie Ann Gardner Koontz]”

This Easter card was sent by my Great Grandmother to my 18 month old Aunt.  Great Grandma consistently spelled Leila’s name Lela.  Also of interest in the addressing of the card is the change of address from 92 to 4238 Tireman.   Grandma Florence and Grandpa Lee did not move.  The City of Detroit renumbered all the residences and 92 became 4238.

An Easter Thought – 1920

Easter0007

An Easter Thought.  Easter means “Optimism” set to Music and adorned with Beauty.  I wish for you it’s truest happiness!     1832C.

Post marked Columbus, Ohio. April 2, 1920.   Addressed to Florence [Koontz] Weaver, 92 Tireman Av, Detroit, Mich.

“Dear Florence, Received your card yesterday glad you got home all OK.  Essie [Koontz Postal] had a nice visit too.  A round got home Ethel [Koontz Griste] or coming to Co [Columbus].  C [Charles McKinley Griste] starts to work Monday M. I guess Ethel is glad.  I hope they will get a house close by.  I am sorry that I put a bug in Lela [Leila Marie Weaver] ear.  I told her if she wanted to come back to Grandma she should cry real hard so you will have to bring her back.  Mother [Phebie Ann Gardner Koontz]”

Well, a full report from Great Grandmother Koontz!  Aunt Essie also came to visit.  In 1920, Aunt Essie was still married to Louis Postal and living with his family.   Aunt Ethel and Uncle Charles were married for 7 years, had 2 children and a third on the way. So, it was a good thing Uncle Charles was starting work!  Now, not sure how effective the bug in Aunt Leila’s ear was going to be.  In April of 1920, she would be closing in on 6 months of age.   Obviously, her Grandma Koontz, wanted to see more of her.

It is really a great find to have a post card written by my Great Grandmother.

A Happy Eastertide – 1909

Easter1909_1

A Happy Eastertide.  B.W. 354  Printed in Germany

Post marked Columbus, Ohio.  Apr 9, 1909.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver,  Tireman St. Cor Scotten Ave, Detroit, Mich.

“Dear all:  I received your card the other day.  I hope you will like the steamer.  Write and tell me what you are going to do on it.  Are at home now.  Tell me you address when you go to work.   As ever, your friend, F. [Florence] Koontz”

In April of 1909, Grandpa Lee was just turning 16.  This was going to be his first season working on the Great Lakes steamers.  From pictures, it appears he was a steward.   He never talked about his “time at sea”.    Grandma Florence would have been turning 14 at the time she wrote this card.

Loving Easter Wishes

EasterChicken

Loving Easter Wishes.

No post mark.  Addressed to Master Lee Weaver, Greenfield, Michigan  R.F.D No 1.

No message.  On the front is written “From Auntie”

Based on the addressing of Grandpa Lee as Master Lee Weaver, and the card being sent to RFD No 1 in Greenfield, Michigan, this would be dated to the early 1900s.   The Weavers lived with Great Great Grandma Lee [Esther Jenks Lee] in the late 1890 to early 1900s on the farm in Southfield Township — the house built by Great Great Great Grandfather Morris Jenks in 1853.

A Happy Easter – 1914

Easter0004

A Happy Easter.  May Easter with its joyous ring to you and your much gladness bring.  Series No. 1628. International Art Publishing Co., New York. Berlin.  Printed in Germany.

Post marked [location not able to be read].  April 10, 1914.  Addressed to Mr. Lemuel Weaver, 92 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan.

“4/10/1914   Dear Brother, I hope this will find you very much improved and the rest of the family well.  As it leaves us this is a beautiful sun shine morning.  I hope Rose [Roseanah Weaver Fisher] is well.  If she needs anything , let me know. Yours truly, Christeen [Chirstiana Weaver Rinehard Schwartz].”

Both Christeen, aka Aunt Teen, and Rose were Great Grandpa Weaver’s sisters.  The addressing of the card to 92 Tireman instead of 94 is interesting.    Apparently, Great Grandpa and Grandma Weaver switched between the two units in the duplex they owned.  Eventually, after Grandpa Lee and Grandma Florence married, the older couple settled into 94 and the young couple lived in 92.

A Bright and Happy Easter.  O Lord of all, with us abide. In this our joyful Eastertide.  From every weapon death can wield thine own redeemed froever shield.    369.

[then, angled, upside down, is written]

“I intended to come down vacation but had so much sewing to do did not get away.  Love to all. Aunt Eva”

Aunt Eva [Evelyn Roselia Seymour Jenks] was the widow of Oliver Torrey Jenks.   Oliver was the brother of Effie’s mother, Esther Jenks Lee.  Irene Jenks and Grandpa Lee were first cousins, once removed, but of the same generation (they were born the same year) and were close friends.    Aunt Eva served as the Jenks Family Historian for many years during the early 20th century and provided numerous Histories of the various branches of Morris Jenks and his descendants.
