A Merry Christmas – 1913

christmas1913

A Merry Christmas. 2085. Printed in Germany.

No post mark [no stamp] Addressed to Mrs. Effie [Lee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan.

“Many thanks for my jewl [sic.] case.  and Happy and Successful new year is the wish of sister Christeen. [Christinana Weaver Rinehart]”

Aunt Teen was the sister of Lemuel Weaver, Effie’s husband.  Dating of the card is based on the rest of the collection and correspondence covered in there.  This is another example of a bas-relief card where the front has been raised to make the picture pop and the back has indentations to make the writing difficult to scribe and to read.

The “Printed in Germany” post cards stopped showing up after the beginning of WW-I.

A Merry Christmas – 1910

christmas1910_2

A Merry Christmas.

Post marked Corning, Ohio.  Dec. 19, 1910.  Addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Lemuel Weaver, #94 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Mich.

“Dear Aunt – As we cannot call personally I am sending by mail our best wishes for a Merry Xmas & a Happy New Year.  Hope you can visit us again, soon.  This leaves us well & hope it may find you all the same.  Your Nephew and Niece.  Mr. & Mrs. E. G. Weaver [Elmer Joseph Goodliff and Alta Lenora Brown Weaver]”

Elmer was the son of Lemuel’s brother, Charles Louis Weaver.  Interesting that he dropped the Joseph portion of his name in preference for the Goodliff, which is the English version of his grandfather’s name;  Gottlieb became Goodliff. The post mark of Corning, Ohio, takes the mystery out of yesterday’s post card of which family members were living in Corning.  It is interesting that the salutation is Dear Aunt when the relation is to the Uncle.  The formality of the signature is also a sign of the times.

Christmas Happiness be Yours – 1910

Christmas1910.jpg

Christmas Happiness Be Yours.  P.C. 224.

Post marked Dove, Ohio, date too faint to read.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave, Detroit, Mich.

“Dove, Ohio.  Dec 19, 1910.  Dear Cousin, I received your card was glad you did not get spanked and got home all right in for Christmas dinners. This leaves we all well here .  Hope it will find you the same.  I am going up to Corning for Christmas.  Sarah Weaver.”

Sarah Weaver was the daughter of Grandpa Lee’s father, Lemuel’s brother, William Powell Weaver.  I am not sure which of the siblings of Lemuel living in Corning.  Not sure why Grandpa would have been spanked at the age of 17.

Not sure if the care was created in Germany with the glitter or if it was added later.  It was not mailed, but it did arrive in the home of Lemuel and Effie Weaver.

Christmas Greetings. – 1908

christmas1908_1

Christmas Greetings.  115. RB Co.  Boston, Mass. & Germany [signed L.W.]

No post mark.  No Address.

“12/23 ’08  Detroit, Mich.   Dear Friend,  Well seeing that I have not received a post card from you in a long time I will take the liberty of trying to wake you up.  Wishing you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.  I remain Your Friend, L. [Lee] Weaver & Co.”

A couple of options here.  One, Grandpa never sent the card.  The second is that it was enclosed in an envelope and it made its way to Grandma who did save it and then the card made its way back into the collection.   I would assume this was written by 15 year old Grandpa Lee to 13 year old Grandma Florence.    Grandpa chided Grandma in a number of cards for being tardy in her correspondence.

A Merry Christmas …

christmas_nodate_5

A Merry Christmas.  December 25 Christmas Day. Printed in Germany.

No post mark.  No address.  Text written fully across the back of the card.

“Mr. Lee Weaver,  Dear Nephew, I am thinking of you today because it is Christmas and I wish you happiness, and tomorrow because it will be the day after Christmas, I shall wish you happiness, and so on clear through the year.  I may not be able to tell about it every day because I may be far away; or because both of us may maybe very busy – but it makes no difference, the thought and the wish will be here just the same.  Whatever pay or success comes to you will make me glad.  Without pretense and in plain words good will to you is what I mean.  In the spirit of Christmas.  From Aunt Christeen Rinehart.  {Christiana Weaver Rinehart, sister of Lee’s father, Lemuel Weaver].  Here is your Christmas donation.  ha ha.”

This card is probably from around 1912.  Aunt Teen married Uncle Charlie [Charles Schwartz] on April 16, 1913, so the use of the Rinehart last name means this card predates that marriage.  Grandpa Lee would have just gotten out of Cleary Business College and would be heading off as a 19 year old on his first job which would align with Aunt Teen’s comments. Grandpa was working in Akron, Ohio in early 1913.
