Command from Ora!  Can always tell a post card from Aunt Ora — she spelled Tyreman her own way.

L. W. [Effie Lee Weaver”

No wonder Great Grandma never sent this — total confusion as to who is coming and who is going when.  Hopefully, they eventually got this all figured out.

Five Million Lbs. of Copper ready for Shipment, Houghton, Mich.  Yellow Front Curio Store.

Post Marked Houghton, Mich. Sep 20, 1911.   Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 90 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Mich.

“I expect to gain a few pounds.   The air is certainly fine and it is very warm for this time of year.  Having one grand time.  F.  [Florence].”

OK, the single F looks like the way Grandma, Florence Koontz Weaver, would initial things.  So, maybe it was her traveling with the unknown Mrs. O.

Zebras and Gnus -1910

ZebrasGnus1911

Zebras and Gnus – This is an actual photograph taken at a distance of about a mile with a telephoto lens, by the official photographer with the Roosevelt expedition. It shows the animals of the African uplands as they graze. The Athi plains are covered with herds of giraffes, zebras, ostriches, gnus, buffaloes, antelopes, wildebeestes.  There are also golden and black jackels, wild dogs, and other animals that prey upon these. Many of these may be seen from the windows of trains on the Uganda railway.    “Roosevelt Tour”  Published by Arthur Capper, Topeka, Kansas.  Copyrighted, 1909, by Arthur Capper, Topeka, Kansas.

Post marked Redford, Mich.  Sep 20, 1910.   Addressed to Mrs. Effie L[ee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Mich.

“Dear Aunt, If nothing happens and it will be convenient for you, I am coming in Thursday (Sept. 21, 1910) night.  How is Lee [Weaver, Effie’s son]?  We are all fine and dandy.  If I cannot come will let you know later.  Mae [Mariam Mae Wright, daughter of Effie’s sister, Marietta Lee Wright].”

Then up the side of the card is written:

“Effie, I don’t think she will be in Thursday night.  Friday night or Saturday morning. Now, perhaps.not there. She wants you to go to the farm [Esther Jenks Lee’s home] with her.  Ettie [Marietta Lee Wright]”

Quick switch in plans before the card was even posted!

“Had to get off to recuperate after putting in such a night.  Florence …”

OK, I know Grandma Florence’s handwriting, and this is not hers!   This is obviously, the Florence that was with Mrs. O and the rough crossing of the Bay.

Post marked Alpena, Mich.  Sep 17, 1911.   Addressed to Mrs. [Effie Lee] Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Mich.

“Trip was beautiful.  Sick for 2 hrs going over the Bay.  The boat lays up here for one hour.  Just grand on the water.  Will send you postal on next stop.  With love.  Mrs. O & Florence.”

No idea who Mrs. O was.  Not sure who this particular Florence was.   Interesting that she would say it was just “grand on the water” and “sick for 2 hrs going over the Bay” on the same card.    Lumber was king in Michigan in the early 20th century!

“Dear Cousin:  Suppose you had a dandy time the fourth. I do is, picked berries from 7:30 a.m. to 8: p.m.  We all went down to Justin’s [Justin Rosenthral Jenks, Lee and Estelle’s cousin, and son of Leman Case Jenks, the older brother of Esther Jenks Lee] and had ice cream.  Didn’t have very much.  Only 5 gals for 25!  All are well.  I am going over to pick berries today. Estelle [Wright]”

Not sure if Estelle was complaining about having to spend the day picking berries or bragging about the ice cream feast at Justin’s.
