The Chippewa River – 1912

ChippewaRiver1912

The Chippewa River, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.  J. Geo. Zwergel & Son, Pub.

Post marked Birmingham, Mich.  Jul 6, 1912.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave, Detroit, Mich.

“Received your letter all O.K. will write as soon as I can.  don’t wait for me to write but write when you have time.  Irene [Jenks]”

OK – not sure what was happening here.  Irene and Grandpa Lee were corresponding in 1912 and were each other’s confidant.   Letter versus post card is a good clue that something was up.  Other post cards talk about Grandpa’s intentions toward Florence (both Florence O and Florence K – the later he would marry in 1918).

Cow in a Stream – 1912

CowsInStream1912

No description.  Just a pasture with cows in the stream.

Post marked Redford, Mich.  Jun 14, 1912.  Addressed to Mr. Lee G. Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan.

“Dear Cousin, Well a little more news this morning.   Maggie our horse got down yesterday and couldn’t get up so Papa [Stephen A. D. Wright] went down to help her.  He got her partly up and she fell down again and on his ankle.   Dr didn’t know for sure if it was broken or just cracked.  Either way it is bad enough for he isn’t able to walk.  Mamma [Marietta Lee Wright] says he will have to do the darning and she put on the overalls and go to work in the field.  Uncle Lem [Lemuel Weaver] about the same.  All the rest are well.  Pick berries again today.  $3.50  case yesterday.  Estelle W. [Estelle Wright].”

Estelle must have been asking about Uncle Lem since he is Lee’s father and living at the Tireman address.   As well as asking if Lee and his mother, Effie Lee Weaver are well.

No added information on the outcome with Maggie.

As usual, a lot of information packed on the back of one post card.

Driveway at Orchard Lake, Mich. – 1912

DrivewayOrchardLake1912_2

Driveway at Orchard Lake, Mich.  9011.  — Second occurrence of this picture.

Post marked Birmingham, Mich. Feb 21, 1912.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave. Detroit, Mich.

“Dear Lee, I am sorry but I can’t possibly come in for the dance as I am going to a social Friday night.  I would like to but I couldn’t miss school the next day.  You know Seymour  [Seymour Arthur Jenks, Irene’s brother] was out Sun.  Write soon and tell me about the dance.  With love, Irene Jenks.”

Irene was Lee’s first cousin, once removed.  Not sure when the dance took place.  Possibly Sunday, since Irene was worried about missing school the next day.   Irene’s parents, Oliver Torrey Jenks and Evelyn Roselia Seymour Jenks were among the early settlers in Birmingham.

“Jan. 29, 1912.  Dear Cousin, I got home all O.K. It was 7:40 when I got home.  I walked to Berg Road [home of Esther Jenks Lee, grandmother of both Lee and Mae] stopped to Aunt Ora’s [Ora Lee Churches, sister of Effie Lee Weaver and Marietta Lee Wright] then Pearl [Pearl Geneva Churches, Ora’s daughter] came up to Ed Churches [Edward Albert Churches, older brother of Robert Richard Churches (husband of Hannah Almira Lee Churches) and George W. Churches (husband of Ora Lee Churches)] with me.  I found all the folks better.  Stella [Estella Wright, Mae’s older sister] had been home but had gone back before I come.  All of the kids have gone to ride down hill.  Even Miss McVicar [unknown reference] — Well must close.Love to all.  Mae [Mariam Mae Wright]  [then written across the top of the card]  Is Florence mad?”

Pastoral Scene – 1912

FallingTree1912

No markings.

Post marked Redford, Mich.  Jan 23, 1912.  Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Michigan.

“Redford, Mich.  Jan. 23, 1912  Dear Cousin: How are you?  I am well and the rest are sick.  Our folks are well, but I mean Justin’s [ Justin Rosenthral Jenks, son of Leman Case Jenks, the brother of their grandmother, Esther Jenks Lee] folks and Arley’s [Albert Arlington Jenks,  son of Leman Case Jenks, the brother of their grandmother, Esther Jenks Lee] they are sick.  If nothing prevents I will be down Friday night. Well, so long.  Mae W.[right]  P.S. Have you gone to work yet or haven’t you got a job.  How is Florence?  Mae Wright [Mariam Mae Wright, daughter of Marietta Lee Wright, Lee’s mother’s sister]”

It appears the illness in the ½ brothers’ homes was not fatal — no one died that winter.   Justin and Arley had the same father, but different mothers.   This is the first mention by Mae of Florence.   But with recent correspondence, it is a question of which of Grandpa’s Florence friends she is inquiring.

Goodale Park, Columbus, Ohio – 1911

GoodalePark1911

Goodale Park, Columbus, Ohio.  Published by F. M. Kirby & Co.   Made in U.S.A.  A-4006

Post marked Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 2, 1911.   Addressed to Mr. Lee Weaver, 94 Tremont St., Detroit, Mich. [Detroit post office corrected to 94 Tireman and delivered the post card]

“Oct 31, 1911.  Dear Friend, I received your card am sorry to say I could not read the S.H. as I think you took a different kind than I am taking.  I am taking the Pitman Howard. As ever, K[oontz]  [then written up the side of the card] I was glad to receive your card.”

This is interesting!  I really never knew that both Grandpa and Grandma took shorthand — even though they learned different methods.  In 1911, Grandpa [Lee Weaver] would have been in Cleary Business College and Grandma [Florence Koontz] would have been in Columbus High School.

In the 21st century, this would have gone to the dead letter bin at the Post Office instead of someone actually, correcting the address and making sure it got where it was intended.

Willets Ave, Birmingham, Mich. – 1911

WilletsAve1911

Willets Ave. Birmingham, Mich.  Michigan Calendar Co., Detroit

Post marked Birmingham, Mich.  Dec [day not readable] 1911.  Addressed to Mr. Lee G. Weaver, 94 Tireman Ave., Detroit, Mich.

“My dear Lee:  Please accept this for a Xmas card and for a letter too.  I have been so terribly busy lately that I haven’t had time to think of anything.   Mother  [Evelyn Roselia Seymour Jenks] sent off the pictures.  Hope you will like them.  You said you were going to have some taken.  Please don’t forget yours truly.  Wishing you a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.  Irene Jenks.”

I am sure Willets Ave. in Birmingham has changed a bit since 1911.  Irene and Lee were first cousins, once removed, but of the same age group.
